After Isis disbanded in 2010, bassist Jeff Caxide, drummer Aaron Harris, and guitarist Bryant Clifford Meyer decided to continue making music together. Chino Moreno, a longtime Isis fan, joined the project, stating he was excited to combine his creativity with theirs. The former Isis members deliberately avoided the compositional methods of their previous band, with Caxide noting that the music was not meant to sound like Isis with Chino singing, but rather something more in a pop vein than anything he had ever done.

The group's self-titled debut album was released on June 25, 2013, by Ipecac Recordings, a label co-founded by Mike Patton that had released many Isis albums. Harris recorded and mixed the album, recording his drum tracks at Joe Barresi's House of Compression studio, while Moreno recorded his vocals at Harris' home studio. In July 2013, Palms performed four shows in California in support of the album. A music video for 'Future Warrior' was released in September 2013, directed by Jon Mancinetti.

In 2014, a remix of 'Antarctic Handshake' by iconAclass/deadverse was released, and the band announced a fall tour of the Southwest. The group also released a single 'Opening Titles' / 'End Credits' in 2023.
