Neurosis was founded in December 1985 by Scott Kelly and Dave Edwardson, former members of Violent Coercion, as a hardcore punk outfit inspired by British crust punk. Jason Roeder joined on drums in 1986. The band released their debut demo in July 1986, and after adding guitarist Chad Salter, they signed to Alchemy Records and released their debut LP Pain of Mind in December 1987. Following Salter's departure, Steve Von Till joined in March 1989, and the lineup expanded in 1991 to include keyboardist Simon McIlroy and visual artist Adam Kendall.

Beginning with their third album Souls at Zero (1992), Neurosis transformed their sound by incorporating doom metal and industrial influences, a shift that proved critical in the development of post-metal. Their 1993 album Enemy of the Sun solidified their signature style, described as a mix of precise metal riffs, backmasking, industrial folkisms, and extensive sampling. In 1995, Noah Landis replaced McIlroy on keyboards, and the band formed the experimental group Tribes of Neurot in 1995 and the record label Neurot Recordings in 1999.

The band's lineup remained stable until 2019, when Kelly was expelled after his bandmates discovered his history of domestic violence. The band has been on indefinite hiatus since then, with no new releases or activity confirmed.
