Mouth of the Architect formed in 2003 with Jason Watkins, Gregory Lahm, Alex Vernon, Dave Mann, and Derik Sommer. Their debut album Time and Withering was released in 2005 on Translation Loss Records. Sommer left in 2005. In 2005, the band released a split with Kenoma, and Vernon departed, leaving Lahm to record guitar on The Ties That Blind, which featured Brent Hinds of Mastodon on guest vocals and Brian Cook on bass. Extensive touring followed, with lineup changes including Dan Wilburn and Steve Brooks on guitar, and Joe Lester and Kevin Schindel on bass.
