Psychedelic metal band from Peoria, Illinois, founded in 2002.
Minsk, an extreme metal band from Peoria, Illinois, got its start in 2002. They call their sound "psychedelic metal," and their tracks often open with a slow, simple feel before growing heavier and more intricate by the end. The music pulls from doom metal, hardcore punk, ambient, and noise, and it’s built on tribal drum patterns, dense layers of synths and keyboards, and vocals that echo. The band’s name comes from Belarus’s capital, chosen because, as their official story puts it, that city has been burned down multiple times and risen again like a phoenix. Surviving through hardship is a theme that runs through both their words and their music.
The group came together in 2002, working between Peoria and Chicago. They soon put out a demo called *Burning* as a self-release (or on At a Loss Recordings), timed with a U.S. tour and a spot at the Templars of Doom Festival in 2004. Later that year, they appeared on a compilation that featured only artists from the Peoria area. Their first full-length, *Out of a Center Which Is Neither Dead nor Alive*, was recorded in late 2004 and came out in 2005 on At a Loss Recordings, after they played South by Southwest and the Emissions from the Monolith festival. During recording, original bassist Tony Wyckoff left. Sanford Parker—a fan of Minsk, guitarist for Buried at Sea, and the album’s producer—stepped in as a full-time bassist and kept producing. Soon after, founding guitarist Christopher Bennett and another founding member parted ways, leaving the band as a four-piece with Bennett handling all guitar. To support the album, they toured nationwide with acts like Brutal Truth, High on Fire, Boris, Sunn O))), and Pig Destroyer.
After that tour, Minsk got to work on their second album, *The Ritual Fires of Abandonment*, which came out in February 2007 on Relapse Records. The label signed them quickly, drawn by their growing popularity and the good reception of their debut. They hit the road again in the U.S., playing South by Southwest and Emissions from the Monolith once more, plus several East Coast dates. Their third LP, *With Echoes in the Movement of Stone*, followed on Relapse in 2009. After six quiet years, they finished their fourth album, *The Crash and the Draw*, released by Relapse in North America on April 7, 2015, with earlier dates in Europe.
